When travelers think of Cairo, they think of the Pyramids Of Giza, the only remaining wonder of the ancient world but much of the joy of being in Cairo, comes from the unique culture. Observing this culture, including eating well, can be frugal for the savvy traveler.

Pyramids Of Giza

If you have time to explore the Pyramids of Giza complete with the Sphinx at the entrance, then the entrance fee is worth it. To touch the same stones laid by the ancients is an experience. However, for time crunched or extremely budget conscious travelers, the view from the outside is fine, especially to watch the laser light show at night.

Note: Any pictures of locals or camels usually come with a price tag so be prepared.

Khan el-Khalili

Traders have been bargaining in the Khan for centuries. One of the largest markets in the world, this is the place to people watch, to pick up souvenirs and to perfect haggling skills.

Haggling is expected, even welcomed. How to tell if the shopkeeper has reached the rock bottom price? If you walk away and the shopkeeper lets you go.

Note: The Middle Eastern’s definition of personal space is much different (as in much less space) than the average North American’s. Expect some close encounters.

Falafel In A Pita

One of the most popular Sandwiches in the Middle East is the falafel in a pita (so popular even McDonalds has a version). Deep fried chick peas formed into a ball, put in a flat bread with lettuce, tomatoes, and a creamy tahini sauce, the mix is not only delicious but inexpensive. We bought falafel in a pita for the equivalent of 25 cents U.S.

How to find the most inexpensive falafel stand?

Follow the local teenage boys. Teenage boys (the world over) have a nose for finding inexpensive meals of half decent quality. Then just point at what one of them order.

Juice Bars

To wash down the falafel, consider visiting one of the numerous juice bars. The juice is freshly squeezed but the glasses are reused, often without rinsing, so walk with your own plastic cup if you’re squeamish.

Cairo is one of the oldest cities in the world, a place of pyramids and mummies, but it does not have to be one of the most expensive. The frugal traveler can eat, drink, shop, and sight see without blowing the budget.

The Saigon Zoo is open every day of the year - including Christmas Day! It opens at 9am daily, and closes at 6pm April - September, 5pm October and March, and 4:30 pm November to February.

What should I wear?

It ıs determined by the time of year (and the Halong Bay). In the summer months, the Halong Bay can be fairly warm (tee shirt and shorts or equivalent). However there is always the potential for rainfall, so either take something water resistant, or enjoy the indoor exhibits till the shower goes by. In winter it will be cold, and possibly windy / raining, so warm, water resistant clothing will probably be required. On many spring or autumn days you will want a sweatshirt or perhaps a fleece at some stage. No matter what season it is, make sure you have excellent shoes for walking - there is lots of walking at Saigon Zoo - and it is constructed on a big hill too - so trainers or walking boots are usually your best option.

How do I get there?

Nha Trang numbers 12, 26 and 31 (all from Princes Street) will get you to the Saigon Zoo. If you're travelling by car - put the postcode EH12 6TS into your SatNav, and that will guide you there. There's lots of car parking on the majority of days.

Weather in the Southern Mediterranean and Aegean Coasts of Turkey -

Turkey's Mediterranean and Aegean coasts have a perfect moderate Mediterranean climate. The long, extended summer runs between May and October with temperatures from the low 20°Cs at the beginning and end of the season, up to the mid 30°Cs in the warmest months of July and August.

During spring, the smell of citrus blossoms fills the air, the hills and valleys are green with vegetation and the cool, cloudless days are ideal for hiking and sightseeing. The Family -

There is a great respect for seniors in Turkish way of life and you can often see the younger generation kissing an elder's hand and then touching the forehead as a sign of respect.

Turkish Women -

Equal rights for women were officially added to the civil code in 2002, so women now have equal say in relation to family matters and property and assets are divided equally in the event of a divorce. Women no longer need their husbands consent to procure jobs and they are also allowed to continue using their maiden name if they wish once they are married.

The Evil Eye -

The 'evil eye' is an ancient belief and is one of the time-honored superstitions in Turkey. It is believed that the 'evil eye' is created by feelings of extreme envy towards a person or object and that it can cast a spell on the object of it's gaze bringing bad fortune. The 'nazar boncuk' or 'evil eye bead' is actually a benevolent eye used to ward off harm and evil. It can be seen providing protection everywhere - in homes and buildings, in the car, and they are even worn by babies and young children.

Hamam -

The Hamam, or Turkish Bath, was a Roman and Byzantine tradition which was adopted by the Selcuk Turks in the eleventh century and has been part of the Turkish way of life and a way of life ever since. It claimed an important role in everyday life as not only was it a place where the faithful could follow the Muslim precept of cleanliness, it was also a place to socialize, gossip and even conduct business or talk politics. The exfoliation, bathing and massage routine provide both a relaxing and exhilarating experience. Today Hamams can be found in nearly all Turkish towns and cities and are they are popular with both locals and tourists alike.

Religion -

Whilst the population of Turkey is about 99% Muslim, Turkeyis a secular state which allows complete freedom of worship to non-Muslims. Tourists traveling in coastal hotels are unlikely to see much evidence that they are in a Muslim nation, except for the call to prayer which can be heard 5 times per day. If entering a mosque, dress conservatively and avoid traveling during prayer times or on Fridays, the holy day. On the coast, dress is generally relaxed beachwear for locals and tourists alike. It is only in smaller villages, more remote areas and the east of the nation that the dress codes are more formal and more traditional.

During Ramadan, or Ramazan, as it is known in Turkey, some locals may fast from dawn to dusk. This is quite relaxed in the tourist areas and should not have any affect at all to visitors.

Public Holidays in Turkey -

Government offices and banks will be closed on public holidays, but life in the resort areas continues much as usual. Currency exchanges and most shops and restaurants open as normal.

History of Turkey -

Traditionally known as Asia Minor or Anatolia, this vast region reflects a remarkable and fascinating history with settled habitation dating back to the 8th millennium BC. Anatolia has seen virtually every preeminent western civilisation come and go including the Assyrians, Hittities, Phrygians, Urartian, Greeks and Romans. Valuable artefacts, including what is believed to be the first landscape picture ever painted were left behind and are displayed at Ankara's Museum of Anatolian Civilizations. Many of the museums' artefacts are the only clues we have to the earliest civilizations.

Some of the finest sites emerged from the Hellenistic period such as the remains of ancient Troy and the ruined settlements of Lycia. The nearly all impressive of them all is ancient Ephesus. It is believed that the Virgin Mary spent her last days in a small house on the edge of Ephesus whilst Saint John the Evangelist came to look after her. Now a place of Pilgrimage for Roman Catholics, the house has received the official sanction of the Vatican.

In 560 BC the King of Persia, Cyrus, conquered everybody and everything and soon subjected the Aegean cities to his command. However, 200 years later they were conquered by Alexander the Great. He led the Macedonians eastward across Anatolia as far as India in pursuit of gaining the domination of Asia. Sure enough, he rapidly conquered the complete Middle East, from Greece to India.

Following its conquest by the Romans in the 2nd century BC, Asia Minor enjoyed centuries of peace. During the Middle Ages as part of the Byzantine Empire, it became a center of Christianity.

The Great Seljuk Empire, based in Persia, was the first real Turkish state in Anatolia. This empire had a distinctive Community with beautiful architecture and design. The Seljuks Empire quickly declined with Anatolia fragmented into a number of small kingdoms. The Turks gradually moved in on these states one by one which eventually grew to be the largest empire in recent history, the Ottoman Empire. The Ottomans ruled for more than six centuries until 1922. The following year, Asia Minor became the larger part of the Turkish Republic led by Ataturk.

Mustafa Kemal Ataturk was the main force behind the development of modern Turkey. The former army officer became Turkey's first President and steered the nation from the wreckage of the Ottoman Empire. Ataturk introduced dramatic reforms that touched upon every aspect of Turkish life. There were many significant changes including replacing the Arabic script with Latin characters. Primary education was made compulsory and religious law was abolished. Women were granted equal rights in matters of custody and inheritance and by 1934 women's rights had extended to Universal Suffrage.

Ataturk is still a national hero- a massive presence in the long history of Turkey. Every town and village has eminders of the leader everywhere you turn. As time goes by Ataturk becomes even more of a hero as the country recognizes his extraordinary influence in making Turkey of today.

Turkish food & Drink -

Turkish cuisine is amongst the best in the world. With enough climatic zones to grow nearly all ingredients locally, there is a vast array of produce to excite and entice the palate.
Besides its famous kebab dishes, there are many other traditional Turkish foods to choose from. Meze (appetisers) for which Turkey is justly famous, are a collection of hundreds of small dishes from simple combinations of cheese with melon to elaborately stuffed vegetables. These are served in all Turkish restaurants and are traditionally accompanied with Raki, a clear anise - flavoured spirit claimed to be Turkey's national alcoholic drink.

Turkey's most popular beers are the home produced Efes Pilsen and Tuborg, and while the wine industry has yet to realise it's full potential, Kavaklidere and Doluca, the best known brands, produce a selection of both red and white wines.

Shopping in Turkey offers the most exceptional and diverse gamut of gifts tempting even the non-shoppers amongst us.

Traditional handicrafts such as carpets, kilims, copper goods, painted pottery and jewellery are popular buys, along with a good selection of leather goods, sandals and beachwear which can be found in nearly all of the larger hotels.

In coastal and traveler frequented areas, opening hours are quite flexible and during the summer a lot of shops stay open until late at night, seven days a week, leaving tourists to browse at their leisure and escape the heat of the day.

In souvenir shops and kiosks, it's always worth trying your skill at haggling. For food shopping, local markets provide basics, whilst the super-markets found near the larger hotels are similar to those we are used to at home.Most resort areas have a weekly market selling local produce, crafts and textiles and are well worth a visit.

Transport -

Hiring a car is one of the best ways to get out and about, giving you the freedom to explore at your leisure.

Local transport within the towns and hotels consists of dolmus or minibuses (taxis) that run from one point to another and you can hop on and off anywhere along the route and pay according to the distance travelled.

Things to do in Turkey -

Turkey offers a wide variety of activities for couples and families alike.

Watersports including windsurfing, parasailing, jet skiing and canoeing are popular on designated beaches in or near a lot of of the larger hotels. Scuba diving is also widely available, and the calm, clear waters are ideal for beginners and novice divers. Walking and trekking are becoming increasingly popular and they offer you of the best ways to explore the realmside.

Currency in Turkey -

New Turkish Lira (YTL) is the official currency in Turkey. "Y" stands for "Yeni" ("New") in Turkish as the new notes and coins replaced the ancient currency which was withdrawn from circulation in January 2006. It can be purchased from your bank in advance, in which case we would advise you to order at least two weeks before your departure date. Alternatively you can change currency, or travellers cheques once you have arrived in Turkey. It's easy to change up all foremost currencies in exchange offices, post offices and hotels. Exchange offices are also located in the arrivals halls at most Turkish aiports.

Currency can be also obtained from ATM/cash machines throughout Turkey, providing the symbols on the machine match those on your debit/cash card. Your bank should be able to give you further information on using your card abroad. If you do find yourself short of Turkish Lira at any point, many stores and restaurants in the coastal hotels and larger cities will accept payment in overseas currency. But if you are planning to travel to other parts of the nation, it is advisable to carry some Turkish Lira.

The New Turkish Lira comes in notes of 5,10, 20, 50 and 100. The coins, called New Kurus (Ykr), come in 1, 5, 10, 25, 50 and you New Turkish Lira. You hundred New Kurus equals you New Turkish Lira.

It is also worth noting that they may not accept any foreign bank notes for exhange which are ripped or have been scribbled on.

Passports & Visas -

British citizens require a standard ten year passport which must be valid for at least six months after the date of arrival back in the UK. Children under 16 years require their own passport if not already on a parents passport before October 1998.

British citizens (including infants) have to pay a traveler visa of £10 upon arrival. This must be paid in note form in cash. Scottish currency is not accepted in Turkey.

Full details and application forms for a full British passport can be obtained from main post offices or direct from the Passport Office.

Non UK passport holders are recommended to contact the appropriate Embassy in London as to their visa fee.

Turkey Time Difference

Turkey is two hours ahead of the GMT. It is a good idea to adjust your watch as soon as you arrive, as any airline timetables are expressed in local time.

Vaccinations for Turkey -

No vaccination certificates are compulsory for entry to Turkey. You should always check with your doctor, in good time prior to departure, if there are any inoculations the Department of Health consider essential or advisable for any specific areas.

When To Go -

The main season for travelers to Turkey's western Aegean and Mediterranean coastal hotels is between May to October, when the weather is settled and the days are long and balmy.

Temperatures collection from the mid 20°Cs early and late season, to the mid 30°Cs during the peak season of July and August which is also the most popular time to visit when all the activities are in full swing. The sea temperatures are warm and ideal for take a dipming throughout the summer, and it is not infrequent to be able to take a dip in the sea even in November.

The Turkish resorts do quieten down in winter and a lot of facilities available during the summer days may not be available during winter.

What is the voltage and do we should use adaptors?

The current is 220 V. Wall sockets take two rounded pin plugs, like many European countries. You will need an adapter plug to use US appliances.

Is there a time difference?
Yes, Turkey is on GMT + 2 (daylight saving GMT +3 operates between late March to late September). This means that for most of the year, Turkey is two hours ahead of the UK. It is a good idea to adjust your watch as soon as you arrive in Turkey.

What should I take?

You can now find nearly all western goods, including holiday essentials such as suntan and aftersun lotions, insect and mosquito repellents, and such like in most of the larger hotels and supermarkets. Taking these items with you saves time and also ensures that you can find your preferred brands. It's worth taking a high protection sunscreen, especially during high season when temperatures can soar, a wide-brimmed sun hat, and a mosquito repellent both for your room and a spray for yourself when you are outside in the evenings. Also do take a European-type 2 pin adaptor for your electrical equipment - these can be difficult to find in Turkey. A photocopy of your passport is useful to keep on you as a means of ID, and if you are driving, a copy of your license as well to keep in the car.

Are stores open on the day of our arrival?

During the summer season, and especially in the resort areas, supermarkets, minimarkets and a lot of shops are open daily, often till early evening.
As a general guideline opening days and times are as follows:

Banks: 09.00 - 12.00 and 13.30 - 17.00 Monday to Friday.

Post Offices: (identified by yellow PTT signs) 08.00 - 20.00 Monday to Saturday, and 09.00 - 19.00 on Sundays.

Museums - 09.00 - 17.00 Tuesday to Sunday.

Chemists (eczane) - 09.00-19.00 Monday to Saturday. A duty chemist is appointed on a rota basis to remain open for 24 hours, details of which are posted in any pharmacist's front window.

Stores: in the resorts, and particularly during the summer months, bazaars and a lot of traveler shops open daily from around 09.00 till late in the evening, often till 22.00. More regular type shops may close earlier in the evening, and on Sundays.

Supermarkets: most supermarkets are open daily, and the larger ones are often open till 22.00 during the summer, a few open 24 hours.

Cafés and restaurants tend to operate open-ended hours and may not close till early in the morning.

Are there insects?

There can be mosquitos in certain areas so plan on taking a repellent. Ants are frequent in some rural areas.

What is driving like in Turkey?

As in the rest of the Mediterranean, other road users may seem to the overseas driver to force unpredictably. The roads are generally well kept, but some coastal or mountain roads tend to be narrow and winding.

You should be aware of the following points:

They drive on the right-hand side of the road in Turkey, which means you must yeild to the right at junctions and traffic circes (vehicles joining the roundabout have the right of way).

Be sure to wear your seat belt to avoid a on-the-spot fine

There are strict drink driving laws - absolutely no alcohol if you intend to drive. Random road checks are quite common and police will fine you on-the-spot.

If an on-coming or following vehicle flashes it's lights, this means they are coming through or passing - it's best to give the right of way.

You should drive defensively at all times, and great care should be taken when driving after dark because you may come across dimly lit or slow moving vehicles, or animals wandering across the road.

What’s your favorite book? And when you were reading it, did you get the sense that the places being described practically jumped off the page? For example, readers of the Harry Potter series have flocked to the U.K. in the last several years to experience places that evoke memories of their favorite wizard. Sometimes a novel inspires travel because of a popular film adaptation; that’s the case with the vampire series “Twilight.” Though the Stephenie Meyer books are set in Forks, Wash., most of the on-screen version of “Twilight” was filmed in and around Portland, Oregon.

Turkey's capital city of Istanbul is the perfect example of an antithesis. This ancient destination manages to combine old with new, trends with tradition and even Europe with Asia. So on your holiday to Turkey why not take a visit to this enigmatic destination?

If there is just one building that you have to visit whilst on your holidays to Turkey then the Sultan Ahmed Mosque is it. The building is more commonly referred to as the blue mosque due to the blue tiles which decorate the walls of its interior. Sultan Ahmed Mosque can be visited daily for free, but it's important that you remember whilst on your Turkey holidays that the building is still working. Therefore you should aim to organise your visiting hours around the five daily prayer times. The mosque has six minarets and is best entered through the hippodrome which allows you to best experience the sheer scale of the building.

Another religious building that you may want to visit whilst on your Turkey holidays is the Hagia Sophia, considered by many architects to be one of the most important buildings ever constructed. Indeed in the 6th century when it was first completed the dome-shaped roof was considered to be a remarkable feat in engineering. Like many of the mosques in Istanbul, Hagia Sophia originally started out as a church and was once considered to be one of the important Christian churches in the world. It was certainly the biggest up until the time St. Peter's Basilica was built in Rome. Nowadays the mosque has been overshadowed by its larger blue neighbour and, whilst one room in the Hagia Sophia is still used for prayers, the building is most commonly known for its use as a museum. Looking at all the tiny intricate details at some of Turkey's most beautiful religious buildings is certainly enough to make your eyes water, so why not take a break and indulge in a bit of retail therapy? Istanbul High Street has clothes stores to rival anything in England from 'Zeki' a designer-swimwear boutique to 'Mavi Jeans', which are now big in the United States. However, to get your traditional souvenirs whilst on your holidays to Turkey there's nothing quite like the Grand Bazaar. The Grand Bazaar is made up of more than 58 covered streets and over 1,200 shops. That decision is being faced by a lot of travelers these days, particularly those who see themselves as cultural trendsetters, the kind of people who will cut cocktail party chatter short by casually asking a new acquaintance, "Oh, but you haven't been to Laos yet?"

That's because Asia has emerged as one of the fastest growing tourist markets in the world, both for the hard-core adventurer and the upscale vacationer just looking for a nice place to relax. According to the World Tourism Organization, India and Southeast Asian countries like Vietnam, Cambodia and Indonesia had double-digit increases in international tourist arrivals last year.

For those who want to stay ahead of the crowds, here are a few emerging destinations with the makings of the next Asian hot spots.

Hainan Island, China Floating off the southern tip of China, the tropical island of Hainan has drawn vacationers from mainland China for years with palm-fringed beaches and warm temperatures year round.

Now, major resorts including Starwood's Le Méridien, Fairmont, Mandarin Oriental and Four Seasons are adding hotels along its shores that will most likely attract a broader base of tourists.

Most of the high-end developments are clustered in Sanya, on the island's southern coast. A 450-room Ritz-Carlton opened there in April with 33 pool villas, each with a private butler. Also new is a Banyan Tree, with 61 villas in nearby Luhuitou Bay. Mandarin Oriental is expected to open a resort with more than 290 rooms next year, while Fairmont has plans for a 702-room resort in 2011.

Concierge.com, the travel Web site of Condé Nast Traveler, put Hainan Island on its 2008 "It" list, naming it one of the 10 must-see destinations of the year and even comparing it with Hawaii, without the Honolulu high-rises and crowds.

Kerala, India

Goa, the former hippie enclave on India's west coast, is often cited as the hot spot for travelers seeking spiritual enlightenment and all-night beach parties.

Kerala, about 400 miles south of Goa along India's southwestern tip, is emerging as a quieter alternative with its long shorelines, sprawling plantations and soothing spas that specialize in the healing practice of ayurveda, the traditional Hindu medicine of India.

"As the spa business globally has exploded, Kerala as the center of this treatment style has been able to take advantage of that," said Scott Woroch, executive vice president, worldwide development of Four Seasons, which is developing a small resort there.

There are dozens of ayurvedic spas and health centers to choose from. One of the newest is at The Leela Kempinski Kovalam Beach Hotel, which opened an 8,000-square-foot spa ayurvedic wellness center last year called Divya with 18 therapists, 4 physicians trained in ayurvedic medicine and an open-air meditation hall.

So far, foreigners make up a small fraction of the visitors to Kerala. For example, 515,808 foreign tourists visited Kerala last year, compared with about 6.64 million domestic tourists. Yet, foreign visitors are growing fast, up 20 percent from the year before, according to Keralatourism.org, the official Web site of the Kerala Department of Tourism.

Indeed, Western tour companies have started adding Kerala to their standard India itineraries. "Kerala is an up-and-coming destination but still relatively unknown," said Manuela Khoury, director of hotel relations for Butterfield & Robinson, a biking and walking tour company based in Toronto. The company plans to add Kerala to its repertory of active travel trips this spring.

Vietnam

For some time now, Vietnam has been popular with budget travelers for its cheap eats, low-priced lodging and shops that count on travelers to bargain for souvenirs. But that isn't stopping luxury hotels like the Four Seasons and Banyan Tree from trying to turn Vietnam into a posh getaway. After all, the country offers beautiful beaches, exotic cuisine and a burgeoning art scene. It also has Unesco World Heritage Sites like the ancient town of Hoi An, a well-preserved example of a traditional Southeast Asian trading port, and Ha Long Bay in the Gulf of Tonkin, with some 1,600 limestone islands and islets jutting out of the water.

Some upscale hotel chains, like Park Hyatt, have already raised their flags in Ho Chi Minh City, the country's largest city. But others are seeking out lesser known regions. Six Senses, based in Bangkok, is planning to open a high-end resort next summer on the remote island of Con Dao in southeast Vietnam. The resort will have 51 villas with private infinity pools (some villas have two) and a private plane to shuttle guests from Ho Chi Minh City, 45 minutes away. It would be the company's fourth resort in Vietnam; others are in Nha Trang on the south-central coast and Dalat in the central highlands.

Banyan Tree is developing a $270 million complex with hotels, spas and an 18-hole golf course, along a pristine stretch of the famed China Beach on the south central coast. And Four Seasons plans to open a 75-room resort by 2011 on Cham Island, a 15-minute boat ride from historic Hoi An.

Laos

Waves of travelers are being lured to Laos by the promise of extreme luxury and the Southeast Asian government's embrace of eco-tourism. The picturesque town of Luang Prabang, named a Unesco World Heritage Site for its unique blend of Laotian and European architecture, is going upscale. Villa Maly opens Oct. 1 with 33 rooms and a central building that was once the residence of a Laotian prince and princess. And Amanresorts, the luxury hotelier, is opening a new resort by early next year.

Elsewhere in the country, eco-tourism is gaining ground. The Laotian government is developing eco-tourism projects in Luang Namtha, Luang Prabang, Khammouane and Champassak provinces, according to Ecotourismlaos.com, an official site of the Lao National Tourism Administration.

Journeys Within, a tour company based in Truckee, Calif., that specializes in Southeast Asia, recently began offering tours of the Plain of Jars, an area in northern Laos known for its ancient stone urns. "For people that are excited by archaeology and unsolved mysteries it's a perfect match," said Andrea Ross, director of tours. "There are also many hill tribes in the area that allow for more cultural exploration."

Nepal is a landlocked country situated in South Asia. It bordered two countries namely the north People's Republic of China, and the east and west India. It has a monsoonal climate with about four main seasons. Nepal is a predominantly rural society with about 85 percent of its inhabitants living in the countryside.

Ethno-tourism is gradually popular in Nepal and it is designed to reduce economic and social benefits for the local societies. It also reduces negative impacts to the environment and cultural heritage. It is a specialized kind of cultural tourism and it can be defined as a kind of excursion that concentrates on the jobs of human rather than nature.

Nepal is also separated into 75 district and 14 zones. All districts are headed by one permanent chief district official responsible for maintaining order and the law. The 14 zones of Nepal are Bagmati, Bheri, Dhawalagiri, Gandaki and Janakpur, Kamali, Kosi, Lumbini as well as Mahakali, Mechi, Narayani, Rapti, Sagarmatha and Seti.
